Soft/weak story refers to buildings with inadequate lateral resistance in certain stories, leading to disproportionate damage during seismic events. Such structures are particularly vulnerable to collapse or severe damage, especially in the weak or soft story segments. Soft story irregularity occurs when the ground story has additional height for parking lots, shops, or commercial purposes, leading to increased stiffness irregularity. Weak story irregularity arises when ground stories are used for parking lots or commercial purposes without the placement of walls, while upper stories have more walls, resulting in irregular shear strength between adjacent stories. Throughout history, many buildings worldwide have suffered severe damage or collapsed due to soft story and weak story problems following earthquakes. Surprisingly, despite these issues being well-known among engineers and scientists, these issues continue to cause fatalities in some countries even in the twenty-first century. This study investigates a building with various scenarios to analyze the presence of soft/ weak story conditions and to determine whether collapse occurs through simulation analysis. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of these conditions using advanced solid mechanics simulation techniques to enhance our understanding of building behavior during earthquakes and to propose potential solutions for mitigating these vulnerabilities.
