At the turn of the millennium, the agro-food sector faces two major challenges: the first is ensuring that consumers have an adequate supply of food (food security), and the second is ensuring that food is secure for consumption. The agri-food industry, from individual farms to larger enterprises on a local, national, and even global scale, is founded on the principle that food must be of high quality and safe. The current food chain’s safety and quality controls are either inadequate or poorly executed, resulting in the contamination of food products by chemicals and/or microbes. This, in turn, undermines consumer confidence. This is the point at which the Food Safety Management System (FSMS) is implemented. At some point in their lives, all living organisms are obligated to acquire and consume sustenance. Nutrients, which are present in food, are the fundamental building elements for all bodily functions, including movement, development, reproduction, and the most basic cellular processes. Animals exhibit a diverse array of dietary preferences, ranging from those that are predominantly plant- and animal-based (catholic) to those that are more restricted in their variety (monotypic). Furthermore, there is a diverse range of feeding behaviours, ranging from nearly constant feeding and metabolism to situations characterised by irregular digestion. The molecular studies that aim to comprehend the underlying integrative mechanisms of specific reactions have recently been added to the numerous ecological, behavioural, and physiological investigations of fasting reactions.
