Heavy metals, insecticides, mycotoxins, and processing-induced chemicals are some of the food contaminants that pose serious health hazards. Health problems inflicted by these contaminants include disordering blood cells, hematopoiesis, and compromise of blood cell life span, causing disorders like anemia, leukopenia, or thrombocytopenia. Understanding these aspects will provide a basis for public health consciousness and the development of mitigation strategies. The aim of the present study is to assess the hematological effects after exposure to food contaminants and elucidate the mechanisms of action through which such contaminants interfere with the formation, function, and survival of blood cells. Specific objectives include studying the effect of heavy metals, pesticide residues, and other common contaminants on some of the main hematological parameters. This work involved a meta-analysis of a systematic review from peer-reviewed scientific studies conducted between 2000 and 2024. Studies in animal models and clinical studies relating to impacts on hematology exerted by certain food contaminants were considered. Hemoglobin levels, RBC count, white blood cell count, and platelet count were some of the parameters assessed. Heavy metals such as lead and cadmium significantly lower hemoglobin levels and erythrocyte count, resulting in anemia. The pesticide induced dysfunction of leukocytes that impaired the immune response. Mycotoxins such as aflatoxins interfere with the aggregation of platelets, leading to an increase in the risk of bleeding disorders. These in vitro studies confirmed oxidative stress and apoptosis as the predominant mechanisms contributing to hematotoxicity. Thus, Food contaminants reflectively affect hematological health in which oxidative stress and damage to cells play a major role. There is a need for regulation to restrict the levels of contaminants and encourage safe food practices. Further focus is warranted to evaluate preventive and therapeutic approaches.
