Pet Companionship, Intimate Relationships, and Mental Health in an Older Couple
摘要
Pet companionship plays a pivotal role in the lives of older couples, significantly influencing their intimate relationships, by fostering deeper connections and enhancing mental well-being. This chapter delves into the dynamics of pet companionship and its relation to the quality of intimate relationships among older couples and its contribution to their mental health in late adulthood. Through the eyes of a retired older couple, Mona, a 71-year-old nurse, and Paul, a 74-year-old teacher, this chapter explored the multifaceted role of pets in their relationship. Their experiences shed light on the significance of this bond for promoting healthy, and fulfilling intimate relationships, with the emotional well-being from pets, strengthening mental health in old age, enabling a meaningful couple relationship (see Chap. 18, “Meaning-Making in Love Stories in Cultural Perspectives: Expressions, Rituals, and Symbols”), easing new affective relationships with other people, and enhancing physical and sensory abilities. Last, by exploring the pet-old couple relationship dynamics, this chapter also deepened the challenges that pets may bring to the quality of intimate older relationships.
