The purpose of this chapter is to review the key issues and reveal the cultural assumptions underlying the issues and intercultural competencies for building sustaining loving relationships between Americans and Japanese in bicultural marriages. Transforming bicultural misunderstandings into trusting bicultural relationships is the ultimate goal of the authors. Utilizing the autoethnographic method, the authors investigated the stories of 22 Americans and Japanese in bicultural marriages between Americans and Japanese living in Japan to find key themes. These are the power of empathy, building shared goals, a mutual respect and appreciation for cultural diversity, and continual efforts toward resolving misunderstandings through utilizing intercultural communication competencies. Cultural interpretations and intercultural competencies applied to the issues most commonly identified in bicultural marriages have been utilized to strengthen and sustain loving relationships between Japanese and Americans. Educators, counselors, friends, and families who strive to support struggling partners in bicultural marriages may find these thoughts and practices applicable.
