Poem in DL, its ‘colloquial tone … by turns mock-heroic, bantering and lyrical’ (Bornstein [1988], p. 23), inspired by *Domett’s departure for New Zealand. Waring—a ‘fancy portrait’ (*Arnould in BC 7.391) rather than a literal likeness of Domett—is ‘a restless, aspiring, sensitive person, who has planned great works, though he has completed none’ (Orr [1896], p. 307). Phelan (2003), pp. 83–5, studies RB’s ambivalence towards Waring’s imagined imperialist adventures, citing Woolford and Karlin (1996) on this ‘oriental and imperial fantasy worthy of Rider Haggard’ (p. 110). Waring goes out to make the colonised peoples ‘European-hearted’ (105), but the poem implies, Phelan argues, that such apparent heroism is imaginary (p. 84).
