Group of four loosely related (see O 15.337–8) poems in Asolando. They explore a nightmarish world of gloom, suspicion, ‘haters’ and ‘love’s fever-fret’ (2.29–30), Satanic rites, a city and a forest ‘each devouring each’ in an ‘accurst’ blending of nature and art (3.27, 36). The first poem was written in 1887 and the others probably some time in 1887–8.
