A modern reader of Aristotle’s Topics may find resemblances in the way the key notion of problema is defined in Book I and the structure of the medieval quaestio-form. The aim of this chapter is to consider the ways in which medieval scholars themselves understood these similarities, and to reassess the role that Aristotle’s Topics may have played in the development of this form of inquiry in medieval universities.

A modern reader of Aristotle’s Topics may find resemblances in the way the key notion of problema is defined in Book I and the structure of the medieval quaestio-form. The aim of this chapter is to consider the ways in which medieval scholars themselves understood these similarities, and to reassess the role that Aristotle’s Topics may have played in the development of this form of inquiry in medieval universities.
