Neuronal Plasticity, Connectomics, and Engagement of Extensive Brain Areas by Music

This chapter presents the pioneering anatomical observations of Santiago Ramon y Cajal, comprising his neuron doctrine and its implications for neural plasticity and connectomics. His discovery of unique neurons in the cingulate cortex is highlighted since we now know that these cells are key in SuperAgers. Ramon y Cajal had a strong inclination for art. How music moves us to the depths of emotion is discussed, and brain plasticity explains how music activates brain areas and how neuronal networks are linked to human brain function. Leivitin’s concept of the organized mind and how to thrive in the age of information overload are presented. The impact of Oliver Sacks’s assertion that we are a musical species is presented. Evolving knowledge on neuronal plasticity and connectomics is enhancing the understanding of healthy brain aging.
