South Africa is located in a stable geological zone but is well-endowed with thermal (hot) springs. Thermal springs with temperatures ranging from 25 °C to 71 °C have been found to occur naturally in various places around South Africa. This study focuses on the Baleni thermal springs in the Limpopo Province of South Africa to assess how salt production methods based on indigenous knowledge systems can mitigate the environmental challenges that are often associated with conventional methods. A review of literature has shown the various indigenous methods used in the salt production industry around thermal springs. The sources of primary data in this study included focus group discussions with the salt harvesters, in-depth interview with the local tour guide as the key informant and field observation. The study established the value of indigenous knowledge in empowering the local women who do not have formal education or skills training to earn a living from producing and selling salt. It was revealed that the existing beliefs tend to control access to the resources, thus limiting the chances of over-harvesting and environmental degradation. The methods used to harvest and purify the salt were found to present minimal damage to the ecological environment, which has helped to keep the place in a near-pristine condition. As such, the thermal springs and salt industry are believed to have been operational for over two thousand years, which attest to the sustainability of the system. Future research could look at ways for enhancing the sustainability of the indigenous salt industry, particularly how it can become more climate-smart and resilient to climate change and variability.
