This chapter thinks through the major cognitivist approaches to the close-up in relation to Unfriended (Leo Gabriadze, 2014), a film that unfolds entirely over the messaging networks of its main characters’ computer screens. This chapter argues that the evil spirit that terrorizes six teenagers over the course of the film represents a “virus” in two senses of the term. First, it acts as a form of malware, disrupting the teenagers’ internet connections, seizing control of their user-interfaces, and tampering with the information on their social media accounts. Also, it resembles a certain microbe, the alphaherpesvirus, which tends to mar the facial features of those it afflicts. Similarly, the evil spirit in the film distorts and scrambles the images of its victims, making them seem inscrutable as to their thoughts and innermost feelings.
