This chapter theorizes the notion of the nether-sublime to account for the fact that everything in the mise-en-scène of the disaster film Crawl (Alexandre Aja, 2019) seems to want to swallow its main characters, including the alligator congregations, the floodwaters, and the weather anomalies in the film. This concept runs counter to usual formulations of the sublime, as it describes Crawl’s diegetic universe as one colossal stomach canal that evokes feelings of disgust and disconcertment more than those of awe and excitement. Furthermore, this chapter argues that these reptiles metaphorize the actions of necrotizing fasciitis, the flesh-eating bacteria that infest disaster areas, coastal estuaries, swamplands, and river mouths.
