In this chapter, we present two network metrics of interest to applications executing on wireless and mobile devices: network availability and the time to send or receive data objects of interest. Both metrics are impacted by the use of wireless access links, as we described in earlier chapters. In addition, mobile devices have resource constraints that can also impact applications. Finally, we review techniques that can minimize the impact of the wireless access links and device constraints on application performance and user experience.
