Literature Review: Green Concrete Materials as a Sustainable Innovation

Concrete is a building material in the construction industry with constituent components consisting of fine aggregate, coarse aggregate, water, and cement. Concrete materials continue to evolve in the global construction industry, with various technological innovations and new materials keeping them relevant and essential. The concrete manufacturing industry has a significant impact on the environment, society, and the economy. Some of the impacts of the concrete manufacturing industry include carbon emissions, exploitation of natural resources, waste, and pollution. Therefore, literature review research was carried out with the aim of creating concrete constituent materials to reduce the carbon footprint and increase sustainability in the construction industry. The method used in this research was SLR (Systematic Literature Review), from literature searches, filtering, and quality assessment, 25 articles were found. Based on the literature obtained, the use of green concrete materials includes rice husk ash, fly ash originating from city dust, recycled concrete aggregate, ceramic powder waste, granite powder waste, steel powder, plastic fiber with the type of plastic commonly used being polyethylene. Terephthalate (PET), polyethylene (PE), and polypropylene (PP), glass fiber with types of glass waste used such as bottles, windows, car glass, and glass from industrial waste, rubber fiber from used tires as a substitute material. These materials are supported by many universities or research institutions in America, China, Thailand, India, Germany, and several countries on the European continent which are conducting studies on the influence of the materials that make up green concrete on its mechanical properties and durability.
