Removal of Microplastic Pollutant in Surface Water Using Electrocoagulation Process with Fe Electrode

Microplastics (MPs) were considered as a problem due to their small size. Previous research has proved that MPs resulted in some negative impacts in a long term for human, biota, ecosystems, and environments including aquatic environment. Electrocoagulation (EC) is a potential technology to reduce number of MPs in surface water. This study aimed to determine the removal efficiency of MP abundance in surface water using EC method. This research employed a 2 L sample which was treated using EC with iron (Fe) electrodes for 30 min. The EC processes used voltage variation of 15 and 30 Volts which were batch operated. The number of electrodes were 2 and 4 plates (Fe-Fe and Fe-Fe-Fe-Fe). The MP abundance was observed using digital microscope. Characteristics of MPs was analyzed using Fourier Transformed Infra-Red (FT-IR) Spectrophotometer. The results showed that the highest removal efficiency (95.65%) was achieved in the variation of 30 V EC with 4 Fe plates. Meanwhile, the lowest removal efficiency (91.30%) had occurred in the 15 V with 2 Fe plates. The range of removal efficiencies showed that the EC process enabled to achieve high MP removal efficiency in surface water.
