This chapter considers the ecological phenomenon of mycorrhizae. We discuss how these fungal growths operate in communicative networks that facilitate the wellbeing of trees. We take that understanding of mycorrhizae and apply it conceptually to the way in which the Kurdish-Iranian poet Behrouz Boochani managed to communicate beyond the walls of his incarceration through mobile phone technology while held in the Manus Regional Processing Centre. Boochani’s experiences of migration and detention inform his writings, but also reveal to us poignant images of community and solidarity in the camp. We find through his writing, and particularly in his invocation of the Chauka bird, a message of resilience and hope that he communicates to the outside world.

摘要
