Charismatic Species
摘要
This chapter explores the conservation phenomenon of the charismatic or flagship species. We introduce the concept, focusing on the panda, but recognizing that such species can distract attention from others which may be just as endangered. We consider how this applies to the arts, noting that UK arts funding privileges some “charismatic” organisations, art forms, and regions more than others, and noting that Shakespeare in particular commands disproportionate attention. We recognize calls for an ecosystem approach rather than a single species approach to conservation. We then look at charismatic leaders Al Gore and Greta Thunberg, and note that they too distract attention from less profiled environmentalists, especially those from the global South. We consider Ugandan activist Vanessa Nakate, and Kenyan conservationist Wangari Maathai. But we note that Thunberg’s success has in part been achieved through establishing a strong community.
