Opening with Rivers Solomon passage from the The Deep, in which the alien creature in the novel determines the ‘humans’ had specific way of classifying the world, two sides of one war, in conflict with everything else instead of understanding they merely exist alongside it, I conclude that the novels I have explored contemplate a world of vulnerable co-existence beyond human mastery. In opposition to the extractive view, I suggest that my study of peripheral extractive zones present emergent alternatives and invite Julietta Singh’s ‘non-masterful politics’. The threads of vulnerable encounters with nonhuman species challenge imperialist modes of energy production and extraction, engendering the importance of a non-anthropocentric imagining within the domain of energy politics and culture.
