The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Oncology Nursing: Enhancing Patient Care, Symptom Management, and Decision Support

Cancer remains a major global health challenge, placing significant demands on oncology nurses. Artificial Intelligence has appeared as a tool to enhance patient care, symptom management, and decision-making in oncology nursing. This survey is conducted to assess the impact of AI on oncology nursing. A stratified random sample of oncology nurses from public and private hospitals and cancer centers took part. A standardized questionnaire, validated by expert review, was used to collect data on nurses’ attitudes towards AI tools in patient care, decision support, and workflow optimization. Results showed that AI greatly improved early detection and intervention, with 72.5% of the nurses reporting enhanced detection of complications. Artificial intelligence-based equipment, including wearables and symptom-tracking apps, were utilized by 64.8% of nurses to help intervene faster and decrease hospital readmissions. From a decision support perspective, AI tools were perceived as useful for evidence-based intervention by 74.1% of nurses. Nevertheless, lack of AI training was mentioned as a key factor hindering its effective use by 58.2% of nurses, with 32.5% specifying technical integration problems. AI is of immense potential in oncology nursing to enhance early diagnosis, symptom control, and clinical decision-making. Nonetheless, barriers including poor training, ethical issues, and system integration challenges still exist. The findings are consistent with the current literature and call for increased investment in AI training and infrastructure. AI has the potential to enhance oncology nursing care, but overcoming training deficiencies, ethical issues, and technical hurdles is necessary for its success. Long-term effects can be further studied, and models of integrating AI into oncology nursing can be created.
