Acoustics is a multidisciplinary field of study. Applications of acoustics are found across Earth Science, Engineering, Life Science, and the Arts. Because the field is broad, it suffers from a bit of an identity crisis. Since courses and degrees in acoustics may be housed across a range of departments (physics, engineering, oceanography, music, etc.) within higher education institutions, it can be difficult to attract students to the field. Careers within the field of acoustics are vital for national security and defense, and economic and environmental sectors. Where can we find connectivity within the overlap of mathematics, natural sciences (e.g., physics, chemistry, and biology), and engineering? How do we work together to establish pathways for students to navigate for pursuing a degree specializing in acoustics? How do we recruit and retain interest in the field? The initiative to create an Underwater Acoustics Education Network invites established programs with examples of acoustics education efforts to connect in an effort to attract more attention and students to the field.
