Cabled-to-shore passive acoustic monitoring can provide continuous access to real-time acoustic data at sites of interest. Cable-to-shore systems benefit from a mains power supply and sometimes cabled broadband internet connectivity. This reliance on shoreside infrastructure, however, can limit access of many monitoring locations. Keeping hydrophone sensors and in-sea and shoreside cables safe can also be challenging, particularly when crossing the intertidal zone at exposed coastal locations. Once safely installed though, remote access to “live” acoustic data can facilitate academic research, mitigation monitoring, conservation management, and public awareness of underwater sound. 摘要

This article describes the approaches to cable-to-shore passive acoustic monitoring followed at three examples of established “listening stations.”
