AI continues to evolve and increasingly permeate our everyday lives. However, the degree to which people adopt AI-based applications varies, raising the question of the underlying drivers. We explored this question in an online study (N = 198 participants) with two data collection waves. First, we assessed potential predictors of AI usage behavior, namely attitude toward AI and personal technological innovativeness. Second, we assessed the participants’ actual AI usage behavior in general and for specific AI applications. A regression analysis revealed that personal technological innovativeness (b = .18, p = .02 for general AI use, b = .34, p < .001 for specific AI use), and attitude toward AI (b = .37, p < .001 for general AI use; b = 0.25, p < .001 for specific AI use) both predict AI use. We conclude that AI adoption is substantially driven by a general factor – the generic propensity to embrace new technologies (i.e., personal technological innovativeness) – and a technology-specific factor – attitude toward AI. Future research should consider both determinants of AI usage behavior and monitor if, with the continuing adoption of AI in everyday life, personal technological innovativeness loses in importance, while AI attitude wins.
