RecyCubic: A More Environmental-Friendly 3D Printing Service System

In recent years, desktop 3D printers have become popular due to their affordability and compact size, being used by designers for prototypes, students for models, and families for DIY projects. As 3D printing technology becomes more accessible, it has led to the development of localized community “FabStores” and promoted distributed manufacturing. Some researchers have suggested a distributed recycling system using 3D printing to process plastic waste within communities, reducing transportation-related losses. While 3D printing is often viewed as environmentally friendly, its widespread use generates significant transportation costs, including packaging and emissions. Additionally, the low entry barrier has increased consumer demand, leading to frequent user errors, unsatisfactory prints, and waste ending up in landfills. Many 3D printing users have recognized this issue and conducted research to address it. This paper explores 3D printing waste and examines how to transition toward a more environmentally sustainable 3D printing service system, including the development of a distributed waste recycling system through literature research, case studies, and internet data analysis.
