De-Plant Yourself: Examining the Roles of Continuity, Disturbance, and Emotional Connection in On-Screen Reminders to Promote Break-Taking Behavior
摘要
Prolonged sedentary behavior poses health risks, yet existing on-screen reminders struggle to balance effectiveness and disturbance. Always-on reminders are subtle yet easily neglected, while pop-up reminders are effective yet disruptive. This study explores how feedback continuity, progressive disturbance, and emotional connection influence user engagement and their break-taking behavior. We developed De-Plant, a desktop app with three reminder types featuring escalating visual cues. Our study revealed that always-on reminders increased awareness, emotional cues encouraged break-taking, and gradual screen occlusion not only encouraged break-taking but also integrated well with people’s workflow. Our findings provided implications for designing effective on-screen break-taking reminders.
