Immersive Books: Reimagining Printed Novels Through Design, Augmented Reality and Dramaturgy
摘要
In the digital age, traditional print novels face growing competition from immersive digital platforms that cater to readers accustomed to multimedia-rich experiences. This research explores how augmented reality (AR) can bridge the gap between print books and digital formats, re-engaging digital-native readers with physical novels. By integrating AR technology, designers and publishers can create interactive, multisensory experiences that meet the expectations of contemporary audiences seeking immersive storytelling. The study adopts an interdisciplinary approach, combining design, user experience (UX), and dramaturgy to seamlessly embed AR elements into printed books. Design process ensures the functional integration of AR, UX enhances intuitive interaction, and dramaturgy provides a framework for emotionally rich, immersive narratives. This transforms printed books into immersive experiences, where readers become active participants in the narrative—that we call Immersive books. A key case study for this research is an AR prototype developed for the Portuguese Nobel Prize José Saramago’s first novel Clarabóia, based on a 2017 theatrical adaptation. This research project demonstrates how dramaturgical elements like staging and character interaction can be integrated into printed novels using AR, creating a sensory-rich experience without altering the original book. The research methodology includes a literature review and case study analysis, drawing on works like the AR book project Jekyll and Hyde (2010) by Martin Kovacovsky e Marius Hügli’s, which highlights AR’s potential to enhance reader interaction while preserving the tactile value of print. The findings suggest AR offers a dynamic middle ground, expanding narratives through interactive visualizations and multimedia enhancements without the need of redesigning books. This research underscores AR’s potential to revitalize print media, merging the tangible appeal of books with the immersive possibilities of digital technology, making them relevant to modern, digitally inclined readers.
