A short summary of the main subjects described in this book is presented. The main differences between in vitro and in vivo conditions and their implications for the methodology adopted in both situations are discussed. The mitochondrial metabolic states described by Chance and Williams 1955 are compared to the in vivo conditions. In addition, the use of NADH fluorescence together with other physiological parameters in experimental animals and patients is discussed.
