Landslides represent a recurring natural threat with significant impact throughout the Western Ghats. This ecologically fragile region, characterised by extensive forest cover, has recently suffered from landslide events that have severely disrupted transportation and communication networks. High-elevation areas undergoing substantial human-induced changes continue to face considerable landslide risks. The expansion of urban development has both triggered landslides and resulted in extensive property damage and fatalities. The region’s steep topography, heavy monsoon rainfall, and increasing anthropogenic activities have made it particularly vulnerable to landslides, resulting in significant loss of life and property over recent decades. The entire Western Ghats corridor faces heightened risk due to accumulating conditions favourable to landslide occurrence. Global attention to landslide research has increased, driven by their growing socioeconomic consequences and the mounting pressure from tea plantation activities and urban expansion in mountainous environments. Mitigating damage and effectively managing vulnerable territories requires the urgent development of detailed Landslide Vulnerability and Susceptibility Zonation maps across the Western Ghats, with particular focus on urbanised and rapidly growing areas. Landslide susceptibility concepts and assessment methodologies have emerged in recent decades, with various approaches developed to evaluate landslide destructive potential and related processes. The primary objective is to develop area-specific methodologies that enable appropriate risk reduction measures against potential landslides. Any effective approach to Landslide Susceptibility Vulnerability and Landslide Susceptibility Index necessitates identifying slope failure conditions, systematically mapping these factors, and evaluating their relative contributions by comprehensively integrating all relevant elements in the final analysis. The aim of this paper is to assess the various landslide vulnerability factors in Munnar Panchayat Wards and surrounding area on raster-based GIS platform and generate landslide vulnerability and susceptibility maps. To achieve the objective, a detailed inventory of maps based on all parameters assessed has been generated of the study area from the satellite imageries, primary survey data, and secondary data. The accuracy of results is being validated by constant field observations and prediction accuracies.
