Thyroid nodules are discrete lesions that are radiologically distinct from the surrounding thyroid parenchyma [1]. Thus, ultrasound (US) examination of the thyroid is a key in the management of patients with nodular goiter. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNA) is strongly indicated for the cytological assessment of thyroid nodules at high US risk of malignancy, due to their relevant probability of cancer. Conversely, asymptomatic nodules at low to intermediate US risk may generally be managed with clinical and US follow-up. For these reasons, endocrinologists, radiologists, pathologists, surgeons, and nuclear medicine physicians dealing with thyroid diseases should be confident with the US procedure and the use of a common US lexicon for an appropriate distribution of the information.

摘要
