This chapter is premised on the notion that patriliny, as a salient feature of much of the population of East Asia for centuries, has forged a unique and oriental-featured father-son relationship. However, with the process of globalization and modernization, the authority of the father is being challenged. By reviewing the dysfunctional father-son relationships in multiple Asian films, Chen probes the following questions: how is the discordance between the father and son raised and presented in Chinese films, and in what way are they (not) resolved through cinematographic configurations? The chapter proposes that the coercive father-son reconciliations in films serve the patrilineal descent in Asian cultures, which is achieved through the compromise and occupational inheritance of the son to his father. Through the inspection of the problematic cinematic presentations of the patterned father-son reunions, the chapter contributes to the understanding of sentimental relationships in contemporary China.
