This chapter briefly summarizes the timelines of this evolution, leading to the present emphasis on a human centric implementation of manufacturing systems. Elements of technology that close the physical and digital realms are described, and the role of digital platforms to transform data to wisdom are presented. These principles form the fundamental stepping stones toward implementation of digital transformation of the factory environment. Finally, the chapter provides guidance on digital transformation for greenfield and brownfield manufacutring plants.
