A Legacy in Statistics: The Life and Contributions of Professor A. K. Md. Ehsanes Saleh

Professor Abul Khair Mohammed Ehsanes Saleh was born in 1932 in Bikrampur, Bangladesh, and became one of the most influential statisticians of his generation. He earned his PhD in statistics from the University of Western Ontario in 1965, becoming the first Bangladeshi to achieve this milestone. Over the following decades, Professor Saleh’s work significantly shaped the field of statistical inference through groundbreaking research on shrinkage estimation, order statistics, robust methods, nonparametric procedures, and empirical Bayes techniques. He authored and co-authored more than 200 peer-reviewed papers, several books, and numerous edited volumes. At Carleton University in Ottawa, where he spent most of his academic career, he founded and developed a graduate program in statistics. He supervised and mentored graduate students, many of whom have since become leaders in academia and industry. His collaborations spanned continents, connecting scholars from North America, Asia, and Europe, thereby contributing to a more integrated global statistical community. Beyond his academic contributions, he was known for his humility, warmth, and dedication to education. His influence extended beyond the realm of mathematics as he worked to uplift Bangladeshi scholars and promote international academic exchange. Professor Saleh passed away in Ottawa, Canada, in 2023, leaving behind a legacy characterized by intellectual brilliance, mentorship, and an unwavering commitment to advancing science and society.
