Supporting a Flight Instructor for Customizing Training Scenarios. An Evidence Based approach

Acquisition and Learning of procedural (e.g. Technical) and Non-Technical competencies by flight crew are critical factors for the elevation of Aviation and Aerospace safety. In this context, simulators provide a risk free and safe environment for the acquisition, application and practice of necessary flying competencies and behaviors. Among the most demanding tasks for the effectiveness of flight simulator training is the customization of the training scenarios (e.g. flight scripts) to the individual trainee competencies, based on data provided from real flight operations and previous trainee performance assessments. This customization is still mainly the responsibility of a certified flight instructor rendering thus their design and development a challenging process in terms of time, effort, knowledge and other resources that need to be invested. A promising solution to this challenge lies in the development of a software framework that will support a flight instructor in semi-automatically design, publish and re-use flight training scripts. The software framework will pre-populate some fundamental components in the flight script and then the flight instructor would be given the “final touch” (i.e. Go/Non Go decision) for fine tuning the training session. Information and data for prepopulating the script could be provided by Air Transportation authorities, Airlines, Flight Simulator Manufacturers and Flight Training Academies. For making this integrated system to work, a shared conceptualization is required between the different entities that will provide data, for our proposed software framework. In this work we present initial efforts for such information interoperability by setting the foundations for a description language for flight training scenarios, namely Unified Flight Training Language (UFTL). The primary purpose for developing UFTL is to define a common terminology (i.e. shared conceptualization vocabulary) required for the representation of flight training scripts based on the principles of Scenario Based Training and Evidence Based Training (EBT).
