The Design and Development of Chess-Playing Robot Arm

In this paper, we describe the design and development of a chess-playing robot arm. We explore the feasibility and limitations of rapid prototyping of game elements and software systems for a chess-playing robotic arm known as Chess Master, a turn-based game of chess. Design implications are discussed for different contexts of use, such as games for demonstrations in public spaces (e.g., exhibits and museums), lab-based experimental designs, competitions, training, and personal use in the context of gaming. Reflections on the design considerations, including safety, usability, user experience, and human factors engineering, are described, which can be generalized for tabletop games that involve a robot arm. This project is the initial step to developing a more engaging and interactive game-playing robot arm for tabletop games between players and robots.
