Microalgae-Derived Phycobiliproteins: Distribution, Sustainable Production, Applications, and Recent Advances
摘要
Microalgae are considered to be the most significant, sustainable, and potent source of distinct proteinaceous pigments such as phycobiliproteins (PBPs). PBPs are unique among commercially important microalgal pigments, exclusive to certain divisions of microalgae (Rhodophyta, Cyanophyta, Glaucophyta, and Cryptophyta). PBPs are fluorescent, water-soluble pigments that comprise most of the total cell protein and serve as significant accessory proteins for collecting light during photosynthesis. PBPs have wide spectral compositions because of the assembly of four main subunits: allophycocyanin (APC), phycocyanin (PC), phycoerythrin (PE), and phycoerythrocyanin (PEC). PBPs have widespread biotechnological applications due to their mesmerizing physicochemical and biotechnological properties. They have essential roles in the pharmaceutical, textile, and food industries. This chapter focuses on PBPs’ distribution among microalgae, recent advancements in production technology, and commercial applications for human welfare.
