This chapter introduces the materials and modelling techniques discussed throughout this textbook. The chapter begins with an explanation of the subsurface environment as it pertains to the book’s perspective. It then provides an overview of the three primary topics: heat transfer, groundwater flow, and contaminant transport in the subsurface environment. Following this, we discuss the modelling techniques commonly used for these topics. And subsequently, we briefly introduce the Fourier method, which will be utilized as the primary mathematical tool for solving the boundary value problems addressed in this book. Finally, we outline the book’s theme and objectives and describe its structure.
