Enhancing Sustainability – Strategic Choices from and for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises
摘要
The multiple crises of the recent years have shown the vulnerability of our todays dominant linear value creation process. There is a need for economic, social and ecological adjustments in the mechanisms of the production sector. In the attempt to design more sustainable value chains, increasing local production is frequently discussed. Local manufacturing at the place of need addresses some of the current problems and could make a significant contribution to the reshaping process of the manufacturing ecosystem. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) are considered to be the backbone of the product ion sector in many nations of the world today. Through area-wide distribution and ability to react flexibly to demands, they fulfil some of the criteria that favour a more sustainable production (proximity to the user, avoidance of transport, customised production). This article investigates Strategic Choices by analysing sustainability reports of manufacturing small and medium-sized enterprises using Mayring’s Qualitative Content Analysis. Subsequently, these results are comparatively evaluated. The Strategic Choices identified in this process will help to reveal potentials and provide a basis for possible strategic alignments to increase sustainability in producing small and medium sized enterprises.
