Effect of the Core on Mechanical Characteristics of the Crash Box

This study examines the influence of a lotus root-inspired core structure on the mechanical properties of energy-absorbing structures in automobiles. The research employs a simulation method to analyze the energy absorption and compression resistance of the structure while varying the core wall thickness and core size. Compared to the baseline 7030601.8 tube, the polycaprolactone (PCL) and specific energy absorption (SEA) of the 7050652.2 tube exhibited a 15.3% increase and a 2.3% decrease, respectively. The results demonstrate that maintaining a constant bottom size and altering the top size of the core is an effective design approach to enhance the mechanical properties of the energy-absorbing structure. A larger top size corresponds to a greater maximum force, thereby improving the compression resistance of the structure.
