Introduction of Closed Loop Engineering: Product as a Resource!

Sustainability in traditional engineering education is often considered as a cross-cutting issue or is reduced purely to ecological and/or economic aspects in embedded courses. However, nowadays it is assumed that engineers act in the interests of sustainability. At Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, a lecture course “Sustainable Product Development” is firmly anchored as a module. Here, a holistic view of the product life cycle emphasizes the product’s end-of-life to enable an extended circular economy. The lecture course is project-orientated with both, practical elements and individual research accompanied by lectures. In addition, ongoing Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methods to determine life-phase-oriented optimization are taught. The product’s “end-of-life” is a phase that is not sufficiently represented in LCA and lately not as much considered as the core of optimization as it could be. Thus, students should critically examine “resources and materials” in the sense of “closed loop“, recycling processes, and their economic efficiency, as well as the challenges of current legislative changes (e.g., the act “Right to Repair”). The entire process is carried out in small teams for their special product. The course aims to provide students with a clear view of LCAs, their differences as well as the various framework conditions that usually should be leveraged against each other, to develop more sustainable products. The course outcome is a detailed proposal for product optimization.
