This chapter reviews the Tularosa experiment: the first large-scale human subjects research seeking to reveal measurable effects of cyber deception as a network defense tool. The experiment and its case study are reviewed with insight into their planning and development. Results of numerous published studies using the experiment’s rich dataset are summarized, giving a high-level overview of how cyber deception can affect a network’s attackers. Lessons learned from carrying out this novel study are shared to support any future research efforts in the fast-growing field of cyber deception.
