This introductory chapter to Weaving Stories of Language Education with Narratives of Teachers and Learners offers an overview of the theoretical and pedagogical value of engagement in narrative activity as a productive mechanism for L2 teachers and L2 learners to not only make sense of their L2 teaching/learning experiences but also to make worthwhile changes in the activities of L2 teaching and L2 learning. It provides basic definitions and concepts in narrative inquiry, traces how and why various approaches to narrative inquiry have been used in both L2 teaching and L2 learning research and highlights the unique ways in which engagement in narrative inquiry functions as a sense-making activity that can both expose and transform the inner worlds of L2 teachers and L2 learners. Unique to the instructional context of English language instruction in Japan, this chapter functions as a theoretical and pedagogical foundation upon which the ‘stories’ included in this collection can be situated while simultaneously bringing new insights and meanings to interested readers across the globe.
