Motor Coordinated Display System: What We Have Learned from ARM-COMS

A motor coordinated display introduced the idea that physically rotating a monitor to match the movement of a spinning football on-screen could create a more immersive experience than simply displaying the football statically. Building on this concept, ARM-COMS (ARm supported eMbodied COmmunication Monitor System) was initially developed. ARM-COMS applies motion-enhanced display technology to a video communication system, enhancing the sense of presence by physically moving the monitor in sync with the movements of the remote participant during teleconferencing, which is called motion-coordinated display. It was observed that the motion generated by ARM-COMS prompted reciprocal physical movements between the user and their remote communication partner. The challenge lies in crafting cyber-physical media tailored for remote communication via ARM-COMS, a task accomplished by leveraging human head motions in remote locations. These motions serve as nonverbal messages within active listening interactions. Through research conducted to date on ARM-COMS, various key insights have been uncovered. This presentation will outline these findings and explore the challenges that future teleconferencing systems must address.
