Body Movement Analysis in Cell Culture: A Comparison of Experts and Beginners Using Inertial Motion Capture in the Japanese Pharmaceutical Context

The growing Japanese pharmaceutical market is crucial to global drug development. However, violations of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), designed to ensure safety and quality, remain a concern. While Article 19 of the GMP Ministerial Ordinance mandates beginner training, specific standards are lacking. This study compared body movements of experts and beginners during cell culture tasks to identify specific movement patterns associated with proficiency and to inform improvements in GMP training programs. Experts exhibited significantly more efficient workspace organization and smoother arm movements compared to beginners. Specifically, experts organized workspaces to avoid passing hands over open containers or lids and predominantly used their entire right arm for aspiration and their entire left arm for dispensing. Therefore, beginner training should emphasize container/lid placement and proper arm use during aspiration/dispensing, potentially leading to safer, more efficient techniques. These findings suggest that incorporating specific guidance on workspace organization and arm movement techniques into GMP training programs could improve the proficiency of cell culture technicians. Future research should focus on developing a learning system to guide beginners in mastering these techniques, with a rigorous evaluation of its effectiveness in educational settings.
