A User Experience Study on the Initial Presentation Design of 3D Maps in Large-Screen Visualization Interfaces

This study explores the impact of camera viewpoint azimuth and elevation angle on user experience in 3D maps within large-screen visualization interfaces. With the rise of 3D maps in urban geographic information systems, the initial presentation of such maps plays a crucial role in improving user understanding and decision-making. The research investigates how changes in building height, map scale, and viewpoint angles affect user preferences and experiences. The experiment, involving 30 participants, was conducted in two phases. The first part focused on determining the preferred camera viewpoints by adjusting azimuth and elevation angles based on varying map scales and building heights. The second part evaluated user experience with different camera elevation angles using the SUS scale. Results revealed that both building height and map scale significantly influence the preferred viewpoint angles, with users favoring lower elevation angles for smaller scales and higher angles for taller buildings. The study concludes that the optimal viewpoint for 3D maps depends on these factors, and user experience ratings align with the preferences observed in the experiment. This research contributes valuable insights for improving the design of large-screen geographic information systems.
