Reducing the Flash Phenomenon in Injection Molding of Plastic Parts from Polycarbonate

Quality of plastic molded parts using injection molding often suffers from quality issues such as weld lines, burrs, burnt marks. Among those, the flash phenomenon leaves burrs via the leakage of plastics around specific areas, especially along the parting lines. Such flashings result in aesthetic and quality issues in molded parts, causing product rejection. This study investigated and aimed to reduce the flash phenomenon in injection molding of plastic parts. Under this purpose, the burrs in molded parts were located, classified and measured. The molding conditions were varied and the impact they had on the flash were studied. The factors considered to be variated in molding conditions were the plastic melt temperature, injection pressure and speed. The measurement on real parts showed that among all factors considered, that injection speed had the highest impact on controlling the flash. It can also be seen that a good combination of injection speed with temperature and pressure will result in the minimal flash.
