In ancient times, the Japanese learned mathematics from China and Korea. In the middle of the seventh century, the Japanese court had started to introduce administrative organization, including in education, which modelled the Chinese system. This included mathematical education. All of the major mathematical textbooks were brought to Japan, but it is not clear how the Japanese learned and taught mathematics. While the Japanese would not develop their own mathematics until the Edo period (1602–1868), basic mathematics were nevertheless learned and used as skill. In the present article, we will report a few facts on Japanese mathematics from the seventh to the sixteenth century. We follow mainly to the description of Fujiwara (1954–1960), adding a few recently discovered facts.
