Electoral campaigns are the means by which parties and candidates try to convince people to vote for them. Parties try to ‘frame’ the election so that it is ‘about’ those issues that work best for their party. The different parties had different strategies, with Fine Gael banking on the popularity of its new leader, Simon Harris, Sinn Féin hoping that its focus on housing could repeat its success of 2020, and Fianna Fáil focussing on progress made by the government. In the hubbub, the smaller parties hoped for a hearing. The Irish election campaign in 2024 was muted, and none of the parties managed to make a decisive intervention. If the campaign was about change or more of the same, the public chose more of the same.
