With the rapid advancement of generative artificial intelligence (AIGC) technology, its applications in education, particularly in art and design education, have garnered increasing attention. This paper aims to explore how AIGC can assist non-art and design major students in the artistic creation process, examining its potential impact on enhancing creativity, aesthetic ability, and fostering cross-cultural understanding and expression. Through this research, we aim to provide a solid foundation for educational reform and contribute to the improvement of students’ overall literacy and innovative capabilities. This study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining literature review, empirical research, and case studies. A comprehensive review of existing literature was conducted to assess the current status of AIGC applications in art and design education. Non-art and design major students from various universities were selected as research subjects, and questionnaires and interviews were conducted to gather their experiences and feedback regarding the use of AIGC in the creative process. Additionally, specific case analyses were incorporated to evaluate the role of AIGC in shaping the creative path and its effectiveness in promoting cross-cultural understanding. The research findings reveal that AIGC significantly enhances students’ creative efficiency and output quality, enabling them to rapidly generate diverse materials and stimulate creative inspiration. The majority of students reported that AIGC improved their aesthetic judgment and deepened their understanding of design concepts and cultural significance. Furthermore, AIGC facilitated students’ exploration of different cultural elements in cross-cultural design projects, thus promoting cross-cultural expression and understanding. In conclusion, AIGC offers a novel approach to artistic creation for non-art and design major students, supporting their holistic development and offering significant academic and practical value. The continued application of AIGC is expected to drive further innovation and reform in art education, fostering a new generation of creative and cross-culturally aware designers.
