At present, dynamic fonts have been extensively applied across diverse domains of visual design. This study investigated the effects of the completeness of interactive dynamic Chinese characters on recognition performance and cognitive load. This experiment adopted a two (completeness of Chinese character) x two (professional background) between-subjects design. We asked 40 participants to complete a word naming task and filled out the NASA task load index (TLX) questionnaire as a measure of mental workload. The results are as follows: (1) The completeness of interactive dynamic Chinese character significantly affected the participants’ recognition performance and cognitive load. Participants demonstrated shorter task completion times, higher success rates, and lower total NASA TLX scores for Chinese characters displayed at 1/4 completeness compared to those at 1/16 completeness. (2) Participants with a professional background in art and design gave significantly higher total NASA TLX scores than those with a non-art and design background.
