Virtual reality has advanced to the point of being affordable enough for the average consumer to purchase and use. Due to this ease-of-access, and relative recency, many researchers have begun trying to understand what elements from flat displays work well within virtual reality, and what new design paradigms can be established. The research for this paper was done using Florida Polytechnic University’s digital library utilizing specific keywords and phrases. Articles and papers were limited to those from the past five years to ensure relevancy and state-of-the-art. The literature seems be currently focused on a number of topics for interface design including gesture-based and gaze-based interfaces, and if virtual reality interfaces can provide similar or superior performance when compared to flat applications on a standard desktop computer. Other highly researched topics include those related to furthering the medical field. In all studies found, the tested users were predominantly right-handed. As such, further research could be done to see if any bias is being attributed to the right hand as a dominant hand in the design of interfaces. Another issue is that gesture-based interfaces are considered more pleasant to use, and yet receive worse scores in most research questionnaires. The last major issue covered is that the hardware of virtual reality headsets does not fully line-up with expectations in terms of hand-tracking under occlusion and different lighting environments.
