The Study of Quartz Fabrication Using ECDM

Electrochemical Discharge Machining is one of the most efficient techniques for micro-machining non-metallic brittle materials. ECDM works well to create microchannels and holes in brittle materials like glass, quartz, composites and ceramics. ECDM is one of the technologies used to manufacture micro features on complicated and fragile materials. This chapter discusses the procedure involved in material elimination and the working principle of the process. This chapter examines the effect of varying important parameters of ECDM and their effect on material removal in machining. It suggests the range of parameters to be employed in the experiment. The different workpieces, such as glass, quartz, ceramics, and composites, are fabricated by electrochemical discharge machining. The primary attention is given to quartz machining because a trial experiment has to be performed. ECDM, one of the non-traditional machining tools, made fabricating features possible in a second plentiful material in the earth's crust, i.e., quartz. The quartz is used in the MEMS, microfluidic devices and lab on a chip. The through-hole of <1 mm (micro) diameter in the experimental trial was fabricated on the quartz plate using the ECDM process.
